Top 10 Google Cardboard VR Headsets of Q1 2016 [Under $50)

Disclaimer: These is based on what I have tested, got my hands on and reviewed on my Youtube Channel
There will be a new list once I finish reviewing another 10

and before you start reading take note that at the end of this I will make a shorter lists dedicated to different peoples needs

Also keep in mind that FOV is a number that is tossed around & Measured Differently by Each Manufacturer

So the numbers that you will read below will give you an idea, results will very from phone to phone

To Make things simple, here is something to help you get an idea:
– 60-75 Range = Movie Watching = You will see edges
– 85-100 You will be right on the edge depends on your screen size
– 120 “Full” Cover FOV

Once you find what you are looking for you can use my Amazon Afflilate links to order, they will help a ton:

So with that said, lets jump right into it…. shall we?

The headset that took me by surprise, it reminded me so much of the BOBOVR Z3, in terms of ease of use

Price: $20-25 USD
102° Claimed FOV

Things that stood out to me:

Just buy it, don’t read further unless you want something cheaper 🙂 Or get the FIIT VR 2S I will be reviewing that soon

Now yes it doesn’t have a proper focus adjustment system, but it does have room for glasses users, and as a near sighted glasses user I did not have to wear my glasses with it on

It is very light weight, easy to use and very cheap as well
The strap and facepad combo I really enjoyed, it’s very nice and snug

Once I got mine, I found using it more than the BOBOVR Z4

Also take note that it can sometimes be hard to center to get the white seam to be hidden since the middle divider wall is pretty thin

Recommended Controller To Go With This Headset [Video Review]

I also did find it to be a good Hybrid between Movie Watching & Immersive Experience, again right on the edge of both worlds

Now here is the Big Part about this headset, I totally recommend this for anyone planning to play Oculus & Steam VR game streaming
It really fits right into the future DIY VIVE Blog/Video I will do in the future

This is the best overall headset in my opinion

When this headset came out I recommend it 95% of the time, but the FIIT 2N took it’s place with its simplicity

Price: $30-40 USD
120° Claimed FOV

Note: It was #1 but I had to drop it because it failed to stay consistent, everyone is getting different variations and different design revisions of the same headset I would recommend getting the Z4 Mini (Headphone less) (Its Cheaper) Click Here

Things that stood out to me:

It is packed with functions such as built-in headphones with volume control, touch input, and had an adjustable phone mount

It is very comfortable, had a nice wide 120° Claimed FOV

On the other hand the built in headphones needed to be pushed in to get the full quality, you can mod them out [VIDEO HOW TO]
The mod video will also show you how to reduce the middle center seam line that you may get with this headset ( taking off the rubber pads )

But there is also another mod that can improve the experience with the headphones, by switching the strap to be on top of the ear cups so the earcups will be pushed against your ears, giving you a much better sounding experience

The touch button may not work for people with thick/tempered screen protectors

Also note even though it has a nice full covered FOV, some people don’t like the fact that it feels like looking through a scope, that is cause because your face may not be close enough

& finally the price is just almost right, quality could be better but its a fantastic headset with great optics and the strap/face-pad offer a pretty comfortable experience, that is if you remove the headphones or buy the newly released BOBOVR Z4 Mini (Headphone-less Edition)

For the first quarter of 2016 this was my top recommended headset, the reason be is that other headsets were full of problems at the time

Price: $20 USD
80°-95° Claimed FOV

Things that stood out to me:

The least amount of problems that I encountered was with this headset

It was simple, easy to use and most very user friendly

It has both focus and IPD adjustments and a very simple yet very effective magnetic door mount

It was very comfortable, some did think the nose room was a little too small

Although it was great I found it to be a tad bit heavy, where my neck would get tired of it after a youtube 360 video

But overall its a good all around headset

Next is my favorite companion headset that I use for demoing to people

Price: $6-10 USD
90° Claimed FOV

Things that stood out to me:

That’s right its around $6, I found mine on Gearbest, but you can also find it on amazon sometimes with prime so price will be a bit higher but still cheap

I would say it has a correct calculated FOV, it gives a full FOV believe it or not

Its my favorite headset to take around, its cheap, simple and effective

I would get people telling me VR is expensive, I tell them this costs the same as a fast food meal

It does not have a super clear lens, no ipd or focus adjustments and you cant wear glasses, and the strap sucks just remove it

The size is small and awesome, toss it anywhere and not have to worry about it

Besides you don’t want to demo VR with a strap when your on the go with a group of people

Totally Recommend getting it even if you have any other headset ( HTC VIVE – Oculus – OSVR – GearVR – Google Cardboard )

 #5 Ritech Riem III

This one is old (so is the review), its fading out but I do prefer it over the ones below for its amazing comfort & weight

Price: $12 USD
70° Claimed FOV

Things that stood out to me:

This headset is extremely light weight and very comfortable, I just really like it, at first I thought it was a cheap built headset when I got it, but I was surprised

It has great optics, yes it has a low fov, but it is meant for movies, and yes it does have a built in selection button, perfect for movie controls

The only problem that I faced is the suction cup phone holder, you usually would want a flat back, once your phone is in, it should stay in

and it is the best headset that really feels amazing even with glasses, does not press against your glasses anywhere what so ever

A great headset for watching movies, I watched a Star Wars movie and I was able to pull it through to the end without any fatigue

  #6 Baofeng Mojing XD

The following headsets are very hard to rate since they are so similar.. in problems

Price: $20 USD
60° Claimed FOV

Things that stood out to me:

This one has a nice pair of lenses that have anti blue light coating that help protect your eyes

The strap doesn’t have the best design, it can get very annoying when putting on and off, it has plenty of room for glasses but I encountered fogging issues personally (results may very)

All other headsets I was able to wear them without glasses, except with this one, I get a blury image

It is light weight and its also made for movie watching, and no it does not have a built-in touch button

Not the quickest headset to setup and use

  #7 VR BOX 2.0

Everything is ok except for the phone compartment

Price: $20 USD
60° Claimed FOV

Things that stood out to me:

So I have mixed feelings about this one

I like it because it gives a nice solid mount the strap feels snug

But on the other hand the phone compartment is a hassle, to setup specially with curved back phones

Optics were ok, just nothing to rave about, it did have full adjustment for each eye focus and ipd but

 #8 Shinecon

I have only unboxed it this far but I will review it soon here is what I think of it

Price: $15-20 USD
60° Claimed FOV

Things that stood out to me:

Some people want to know how it compares, well the FOV is extremely small and the facepad doesn’t quite sit perfectly

It does have ipd and focus adjustment, its ok if this is the only headset that can reach you in your country

The phone compartment is somewhat better than the VR BOX 2 but the Build quality was flimsy

 #9 VR PARK V3

An almost copy of the Shinecon

Price: $15-20 USD
65° Guessed FOV

This one has a better build quality & has a better phone compartment than the Shinecon, but the strap is too flexible & didn’t feel snug

It does have focus and ipd adjustments but focus moves the lenses that can touch your eyes if are pushed too close

Strap did not do it for me

#10 Ling VR & Baofeng Mojing IV

One of the worst most overpriced headsets, Why are they on the list? To save you from the horror I faced

Price: $50 USD
90° Claimed FOV

When I unboxed them, there was so excitement because the packaging was premium, but got really disappointing real fast, when the strap failed as in broke on the Ling VR and on thebaofeng it was just not usuable, I was not the only one the lenses really hurt my eyes on the Ling VR, I was not the only one, you can take a look at the video and see how the lenses distort in the middle. And so did the lenses on the Baofeng Mojing IV, it was also bad filled with chromatic aberration

Again a real big disappointment $50 Each!

 Bonus Round

For Glasses Users:

  1. Ritech Riem III
  2. FIIT VR 2N (Might need some modding)
  3. Baofeng Mojing XD

For Kids:

  1. U NOTON
  2. VR BOX 2.0

For Demoing

  1. U NOTON
  2. Viarbox (Cardboard Type, it has a touch input button)

Hope this Top 10 List has helped you, it was my first post on my new site so hopefully I have done an ok job at least let me know below 🙂

I will work on a video as well for this list
